I am using this book in my Task Design and Assessment Course. For the first time, my students are enthusiastic about the text. This book connects with students experiences in learning, and helps them to understand the multi-faceted purposes of open-response tasks. The authors clearly articulate several ways to improve questions from textbooks. For example, instead of asking the question: “Find the value of 2a + b when a = 3 and b = -1,” the authors suggest the question: “When is 2a + b smaller than a – b?” This simple change still requires students to plug-in values for a and b, but is a much more engaging question, and covers much more mathematics content. The authors also show several different ways to analyze questions for math and pedagogical content. My one complaint is that it is short on context driven problems.
