When I first started with Mathematica I found it a bit intimidating, and this book was a great place to start. The second chapter gives a nice overview of some basics you’ll use anytime you do serious computation with mathematica, like learning how to use built in functions or creating functions of your own. It will help you master certain subtleties of Mathematica notation that I found tricky when I was a novice. Something I found nice is that the book is organized by *mathematical* topic, so there are chapters on integrals and ordinary differential equations for example. The large number of solved examples was very helpful, and the size of the book is appealing-compare that to the gigantic manual available. to Wolfram. This is a managable size you can actually work through. I really only have two complaints, otherwise I would give it 5 stars. The first is that more advanced math topics should be included in a later chapter, to reflect problems people work on out in the work place. The second complaint is its based on an older version of Mathematica, it needs to be updated to version 5. Both of these topics can be remedied, hopefully they will do this soon and release an update.

This is typical of the Schaum’s outline series: a decent, no-frills introduction to Mathematica at a reasonable price. When you look at the other books on the subject, they cost 8 to 10 times as much. Get this one, work hard and save some long bucks. The others may be pretty but are they really worth it?

This book is a great resource if you are new to Mathematica. It has numerous examples to follow and covers a broad range of Mathematica’s capabilities.

I bought this product hoping to get a quick but good introduction about Mathematica. This book has definitely given me that. This book does not cater to advanced level Mathematica programming issues.

One of the main reasons why bought this book is to look at many examples on individual topics, and I am certainly not disappointed.

I strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in getting a quick but reasonably good intro into Mathematica. Advanced programming and deeper level understanding of Mathematica can be taken up using other specialized books.
